Baptism
Baptism is the sacrament that frees one
from original sin and from personal guilt,
that makes the person a member of Christ
and His Church.
Infant Baptism
Call the Parish Office (Rectory) at 708.335.1792 to make arrangements.
Parents need to be registered and attend a preparation class before a baptism is celebrated. The
preparation class is offered the week before the baptism. We require at least one of the
Godparents to be a practicing Catholic.
English Baptisms generally occur the first and third Sundays of each month at 12:00 pm.
Spanish Baptisms are scheduled also on Sundays only usually at 1:00pm. We do not offer
baptism classes in the Spanish language; therefore, parents and godparents need to make
arrangements with a neighboring Catholic church for these classes.
Adult Baptism
Adult converts to Catholicism also receive the sacrament, unless they have already received a
Christian baptism. (If there is any doubt about whether an adult has already been baptized, the
priest will perform a conditional baptism.) A person can only be baptized once as a Christian—if,
say, he/she was baptized as a Lutheran, he or she does not need to be re-baptized when converting
to Catholicism.
While an adult can be baptized after proper instruction in the Faith, adult baptism normally
occurs today as part of the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) and is immediately
followed by Confirmation and Communion. For more information on Adult Baptism, please
contact Vesta at 708.335.1792.
